There are many different ways to search for properties.   
You need to be aware that all the searches created for you - the consumer, have only one goal in mind - to peak your interest without having to show you all the pertinent information.  Besides the many consumer-driven web-sites created in the last few years (returning only a portion of the MLS) the following are some of the best and most accurate sources of complete and most accurate information.

1) Realtor.com is the best source outside of the MLS which doesn't require registration.  The downside of it is that Realtor.com does not separate homes that are For Sale from those that are already Under Contract.  So you do a lot of threading in the water - looking at homes that are no longer available. 

2) VOW (Virtual Office Website) is the best Do-It-Yourself search program.  You are treated as if you were inside your Realtor's office looking at homes on his computer screen, therefore the law requires for you to be registered with your name and your e-mail address.  VOW provides you with almost complete search results. 
After registering with VOW a password will be e-mailed to you within a few seconds.  From that point on you will be able to use your password to access all listings at your convenience, flag them, save them, and even forward them on to your Realtor or friends.

3) MLS is the only source capable of producing full and most accurate, and up-to-date data.  MLS searches are restricted to only Real Estate Agents, Brokers, and registered customers.  If you are serious about buying or renting a home than MLS is your best source.  Please contact me with your name and e-mail address (that's your registration), tell me what your requirements are, and I'll send you all of the information available through the MLS.
